Centering windows If you select this option, any windows created by Companion will be centered in the middle of your monitor. Otherwise, Companion will display all need windows in the center of the main Companion window. Normally this is the best option. 1
Skip Listing Layouts Turning this option on skips the scrolling lists of files or messages when a group of records is being used, and starts directly at the first record. Using the Next/Previous buttons you can step through the records. Most users will prefer using the listing type layouts, where double clicking any file or message will bring up the full record, after which the Next/Previous buttons will still function normally. 2
Retain Sort Preferen Normally each time Companion is started, it will not automatically sort the file listings after searching. Once you select one of the menu sort options, Companion will remember that option until you quit it. Using this option, Navigator will remember the last chosen option, and will use it the next time Companion is started. The disadvantage is every group of files must be sorted, which can take extra time. 3
Delete Immediately When viewing a selection of records you can command click on a group of them, then select the delete command. When viewing an individual record, you may also select the delete command. Companion will mark the indicated messages or file listings with a flag, but will not delete it immediately. If you select the delete menu choice while not viewing messages or files, it will then delete all marked files and messages. With this option turned on, the files are deleted immediately rather than marked. No second chance. 4
Category Keywords Each category maintains a seperate list of keywords that are made available when viewing records within that category. Keywords that fit several categories are best kept in the main keyword list, but most keywords apply to only one or two categories, so they are best kept within the category they relate to. 5
Duplicate Checking With this option on, Companion will first verify that you do not have the message or file in the database. If the messages exists, it skips ahead in the import. If the file exists, it replaces the file listing so that you have the most current listing of that file. Duplicate checking is recommended for both files and messages. 6
Selecting Forums You can limit the importing to messages that are from specified forums, or even specified sections within forums. Click the button to set the forums and sections. Currently, you cannot limit file listings. 7
Reviewing If this option is on, during import you will be able to view each message, and decide whether or not to store it. You may also at that time select categories and keywords for the message. Currently this is not supported in file importing. 8
Use Default File You may wish to archive messages within Navigator while reviewing, and then import them from these archive files. If you do this regularly, this file/path name allows Companion to access the file without needing to go through a file dialog box. Whenver importing a file, be sure the total path length is less than 80 characters. 9
Categorize from Subject With this option, Companion will examine the thread title, and if any word in that title matches one of your categories, it will place that message in that category. This slows the import process down a little, but can be very useful. Of course, the Categorize check box must also be turned on for any of these options to work. 10
Display format You can set each messages to display in either a Monaco 9 font (where it appears much like it did on CIS), or to a font that you have set in the preferences panel. Messages that contain excerpts of code are better left in Monaco, others may be eaiser to read if larger. This option sets the default ... all messages imported will be set to this default setting. 11
Delete Buttons These buttons work like radio buttons, clicking one turns the other off. The trash can icon with the open lid indicates that this message or file listing is marked for deletion. To actually delete all messages you have marked to delete, select the delete menu command while not viewing any other information with Companion. 12
Show Subset You can select a group of messages by shift clicking (selects all between) and command clicking (selects each one). Clicking the Show Subset button will reduce the display to only those records you have selected. 13
Set ... These three buttons allow you to modify the category, thread, or forum for a group of messages. If you have highlighted any records, the change applies only to those highlighted. Otherwise it will apply to all those displayed. The forum option is available for times when CIS may reorganize, making some forums no longer valid. 14
Categorize by Filename This option will use the name of the file as the category. If the filename is not currently a category, it will create one for you. All messages imported will then be placed in this category. This option is specifically designed so that you can archive to a "category" file while reviewing the messages in Navigator. Navigator 3.0 will make this option even more useful. 15
Categorize by category Select a category from the popup menu ... all messages will be placed in this category. This is of limited usefulness, but can be handy in some circumstances. 16
Arrow keys Note that the arrow keys can be operated by using the corresponding arrow keys on the keyboard. The return arrow can be activated by pressing the return arrow. 17
Appending Date By appending the date to an archive file, you force Navigator to create that file again when you archive a message. By using this with the default file option, archiving is nearly automatic, and you won't archive the same file over again. 18
Large Message Window Two message windows are available, one show a much larger message area, but doesn't display keywords or as much header information. Using this option set this messages screen to be the default.Regardless of which is the default, switching to the other is as easy as clicking an icon. 19
Combine Threads All threads that are highlighted, by shift or command clicking, will be combined into a single thread. You will be asked to assign a title to the thread. Be warned that once you change a thread, it is possible that new messages you archive in that thread may not be added to the thread, since the name you create may be different that the thread name on CompuServe. 20
Delete Thread This option will delete the thread that has been highlighted ... and all messages that belong to that thread! Use this option carefully! 21
Update Threads This option will search for and delete all threads that do not have any associated messages, update the total message count, and sort the threads so they will appear alphabetically in the selection box when using the Find Thread menu choice. 22
